Teaching Visual Art is an opportunity to help students realize their full potential.  There is nothing that can compare to the feeling of watching a student create something he/she is truly proud of.  I love the feeling of designing a lesson that raises the self-esteem of my students.

The art curriculum I have developed is well rounded, and exposes students a wide range of artistic experiences.  Every year, students practice drawing, painting, sculpture, art history, art criticism, and multicultural art education. We use a variety of materials and processes, inspired by historical and contemporary artists.

One of my favorite units I taught this year was about Georges Seurat.  I organized a field trip to the Topiary Garden at the Deaf School Park, (Columbus, Ohio) after teaching about the artist in class.  The students sketched the garden sculptures inspired by his painting, “Sunday Afternoon on the Grande Jatte.”   The manager at the Topiary Garden gift shop was thrilled to see my students drawing at the park.  He invited us to exhibit some of the students’ drawings in the gift shop. This unit was meaningful for the kids, and helped them build a connection with their community and with the artist, Georges Seurat.

My classroom is a safe and organized space, and the atmosphere is positive and supportive.  Students are given clear expectations about how to get started on a project, how to clean up, and how to work with the other students in their class. Students are amazed by the success that comes out of hard work and an easy-to-follow lesson.
